What’s happening.

Alliance for the Arts is the NYC-based nonprofit behind the innovative www.NYC-ARTS.org website and sister sites NYCkidsARTS and New York State Arts. NYC ARTS aggregates a comprehensive online listing of cultural happenings across the five boroughs. They support and promote over 900 organizations, from large institutions to small, independent venues.

An app for that.

SD architected an elegant iPhone application to give consumers mobile access to the content on NYC ARTS’ website. Using GPS-based functionality and middleware from the current site, the app allows users to “Find events nearby” in any New York City neighborhood, as well as search for events by category, location and organization.  Users can now learn about events at their favorite galleries, theaters, museums, and parks on the fly. The app provides a general summary of the event, along with the ability to map the event location with Google Maps. Users can also call the organization directly from the listing itself.

Cultural phenomenon.

With hundreds of downloads in its first month, the NYC ARTS app is on its way to building its own audience. It’s available for free on both the iTunes store and the NYC ARTS website. As usage increases, it will undoubtedly impact the local arts scene by driving attendance to organizations served by Alliance for the Arts. Our team enjoyed working on a project that promotes the arts venues we know and love; hope to see you at an opening or show soon!
